In the United States, there is a lot choice of places to live in during your military retirement years. There are several places that offer no state income taxes, some places offers scenic views of the sea or ocean, others may offer you the rugged outdoors for outgoing people, or some may even offer you lush gardens and relaxing atmosphere. But what really suits you is not all about the place but the life that you will have in that place. Sustainability and recreation should jive together in order to attain harmony of decision making.
You alone will not make the decision of course. If you are married then you should decide with your spouse so that she/ he will be happy as well when you get there. If you really decided on a place to move in, then notifying your children and relatives is a must so that in case of emergency, they know where to find you. If you're not married then you can ask some help in deciding from a friend or a relative.
Factors like the places' landscape, do you want to live by the water or on a rocky den? The cost of living, how much will I need to maintain a good life here, do I need a vehicle? Is the transportation system as good as where I was before or better? How close is the nearest military base? Where is the nearest Veteran's Affairs hospital? Do I have to pay state income taxes on my military pension? How affordable is the housing? What is the unemployment rate? What kinds of job opportunities are available? Who are my soon to be neighbors? What is their background? What is the concept of my community? What are the recreation activities or places to go to? What is the crime rate of this place? How is the climate? Is it mild or humid? Hot during summers? How about the winter season? Is it prone to natural disasters like storms, hurricanes, tornadoes etc.? What is the educational level of the locals? What are the educational intuitions available in the area if I live with my children and grandchildren? What are the cultural events that are held in this place and how many? What is the religious background of my community? Is there a place for me to worship here? Am I accepted as I am in this community? These are some of the questions that should be answered in order for you to have a guaranteed happy life in moving in to a new community or state.
